Theme Statement

Multitasking is examined in an article titled “The High Cost of Multitasking” by Daniel Willingham. Multitasking has become the norm in our always-on world. According to Willingham, the drawbacks of multitasking outweigh the benefits. As a result, the article’s primary objective is to show how multitasking leads to decreased concentration, lower work quality, and an increase in potentially hazardous situations.

Main Claim

The articles’ main claim is multitasking is that multitasking is dangerous especially using cell phones while driving

Supporting Points: Cell phone use while driving or crossing the street can be illegal in some countries. Honolulu, according to Willingham (2019), prohibits pedestrians from using phones while crossing the street. According to him, multitasking is acceptable in some situations, but only if it doesn’t put anyone else in danger or harm their health. By taking your phone out of your pocket, you can weigh the advantages and disadvantages of multitasking. Drivers who text or use their smartphones while driving, according to Willingham (2019), put themselves and others in danger. Twenty states allow the use of hands-free devices while driving, despite the federal law prohibiting the use of handheld phones while driving. This appears to be a point of agreement among many legislators. There is no correlation between a vehicle’s make or model and its ability to withstand outside threats.

Willingham is particularly interested in the effect of interruptions on productivity while multitasking. When people are interrupted, a lot of time is lost. When you are stressed, you can work faster, but the quality of your work suffers as a result.
