Can Depression be cured?

Can Depression be cured?

Approximately more than 280 million people worldwide suffer from Depression. Is there a possibility of these depressed people being cured? Fortunately, yes. Depression, like most acute infections, is treatable. The treatment of two treatments for Depression exists in the form of medication and psychotherapy. During Depression’s medical treatment, patients are prescribed antidepressant medicine. On the other hand, during psychotherapy treatment, depressed patients are enrolled in Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) and cognitive behavioral therapy sessions. To understand the cure for Depression deeply, this essay defines depression infection, discusses depression symptoms, thirdly explains the causes of Depression, and lastly unveils people vulnerable to Depression.

The use of secondary-peer review sources marks the finding’s credibility. I have used secondary-peer review sources to conceptualize the results that depression illness is curable. Lastly, I have used peer review sources that are well updated with information documented from 2018 to 2022.

  1. What is Depression?

Depression is one of the acute disorders currently occurring at an alarming pace. Depression is a mood illness that causes endless sorrow and loss of interest (Luxton & Kyriakopoulos, 2022). Consequently, it influences how a person feels, acts, and thinks. Even worse, Depression results in several emotional and psychological difficulties for its victims. Due to emotional issues, people with Depression have difficulty performing routine day-to-day activities.

In contrast, psychological difficulties induce patients to feel that life is not worth living. The two types of Depression are major Depression and persistent depressive disorder. Persistence depressive disorder is distinctive as a depressed patient shows depression signs lasting at least two years compared to a patient suffering from major Depression as they show depression signs for almost three weeks.

  1. What are the Symptoms of Depression?

Depression’s symptoms are well noticeable and distinctive from other acute infections. The central depression symptoms are categorized into feelings, interest, cognitive, physical, and psychological problems (Fang et al., 2022). Under the feeling category, a depressed person often feels sad, hopeless, fixed on past failures, worthless, anxious, and restless. Under interest criteria, a depressed person lacks interest in everyday activities, such as working, sleeping, sporting, and socially interacting. On cognitive measures, a person suffering from Depression shows signs of slow learning, concentration issue, and memory problem. The physical characteristics portrayed by a depressed person are headache and back pain. Lastly, the psychological difficulties people suffer from Depression are suicidal attempts, suicidal thoughts, and rampage behaviors. Out of all the above depression symptoms categories, psychological signs are the most hazardous as depressed persons often commit suicide.

  1. c. Depression causes.

There are many-known Depression’s causes. Prevalently, the leading cause of Depression is abuse ranging from sexual, physical, and emotional (Fang et al., 2022). The second cause of Depression is family conflict arising from marriage separation, discrimination, death, and domestic violence. Thirdly, drug abuse causes Depression. Statistically, 30% of people abusing drugs suffer from Depression as drug overdose alters their cognitive thinking making them depressed or stressed (Fang et al., 2022). Fourthly, chronic illnesses, such as cancer and HIV/AIDS, similarly cause Depression among the patient as they feel a burden to their family, helpless, or meaningless. Lastly, other minor causes of Depression are genes and age. Elaborating, a person born from a family with a depression history similarly suffers from Depression. In contrast, aged people above 70 years old are vulnerable to Depression, mainly if they misuse their youth or lack guardians.

  1. Who are vulnerable to Depression?

Everyone is vulnerable to Depression. Children are vulnerable to Depression due to discrimination, stigmatization, and ridicule (Luxton & Kyriakopoulos, 2022). The symptoms revealed by depressed children are anxiety, clinging to their parents, cranky, and failure to form a friendship (Luxton & Kyriakopoulos, 2022). Similarly, teens risk suffering from Depression. Mostly, self-denial, low self-esteem, physical abuse, and peer pressure are causes of Depression among teens (Luxton & Kyriakopoulos, 2022). The failure to attend school, restlessness, agitation and secretion from domestic activities are signs of depressed teens. Likewise, young adults are threatened by depression illness. Lack of employment, broken relationships and lack of a life purpose, marriage issues, and drug abuse are prevalent causes of Depression among young adults. Weight loss, suicidal thoughts, and attempts, insomnia, and aggressive behavior are signs portrayed by depressed young adults. Lastly, older adults are also victims of Depression, especially in the event of ruined adult life’s regrets. Severe headaches and memory loss are common signs of a depressed older adult.

  1. Can Depression be cured?

Depression is treated. Both medicine and psychotherapy are available as treatments for Depression (Cuijpers, Stringaris, & Wolpert, 2020). In milder forms of Depression, psychotherapy alone may be sufficient to initiate treatment. Pharmaceutical treatment is adopted when an individual continues to exhibit significant depressive symptoms. Many mental health providers advocate a mix of medication and psychotherapy as they are effective weapons for treating .persistence depressive disorder. Individual needs and medical conditions should guide the selection of the best treatment approach.

  • Psychotherapy treatment.

Psychotherapy is frequently advised for treating depressed patients with mild depressive symptoms. Psychotherapy sessions teach individuals with Depression new ways of thinking with an explicit goal of influencing them to accept the conditions responsible for their depressed state (Cuijpers, Stringaris, & Wolpert, 2020). Ultimately, the depressed individual end up suppressing depressive symptoms, replacing them with standard productive indicators. On average, psychotherapy treatments run between three and four months. A licensed mental health practitioner legally supervises psychotherapy treatments.

There are two successful psychological treatments for treating individuals with mild depression symptoms. They are Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal therapy (IPT) (Cuijpers, Stringaris, & Wolpert, 2020). Interpersonal therapy (IPT) entail therapy sessions whose implicit goal is to re-equipping depressed patients with social skills, for instance communication, teamwork, and family interactions. Whereas, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) aims at equipping depressed patients with cognitive principles such as memorization, self-acceptance, and cognitive thinking. Combining interpersonal and cognitive behavioral therapy sessions produces superior outcomes, as depressed individuals are cured of toxic emotions and cognitive thinking.

  • Medications

Antidepressants are drugs regularly used to treat Depression. If a depressed individual takes antidepressant medications, it will take them four to eight weeks to recover from severe depression symptoms, namely insomnia, suicidal ideation, and loss of appetite (Cuijpers, Stringaris, & Wolpert, 2020). Herbal dietary supplements and vitamin D are additional prescriptions for medically treating depressed people. Antidepressant medication is mainly employed to treat depressive symptoms by modifying a person’s cognitive reasoning.

However, antidepressant medicine occasionally fails to work, worsening the patient’s Depression. Treatment-resistant Depression is a phrase used to refer to the failure of the antidepressant drug in treating depressed patients (Cuijpers, Stringaris, & Wolpert, 2020). It occurs after a person has tried at least two antidepressant medicines without improvement. It is remedied by adding different types of drugs, such as an antipsychotic, that increase the efficacy of an antidepressant. The correct prescription of antidepressant medications by a health care provider is more effective in curing Depression compared to psychotherapy treatment.

In conclusion, Depression is curable. Firstly, a depressed person should seek medical treatment where the victim is prescribed antidepressant medicines. Noticeably, medical treatment treats severe depression symptoms, such as lack of concentration and low learning, altering a victim’s cognitive thinking. Secondly, a depressed person should seek psychotherapy to re-equip the victims with human social and behavioral skills. Since prevention is the best cure, I recommend that people drift away from the causes of Depression or seek precautionary therapeutic measures.
